Last year, we braved the worst possible route, in the worst possible weather and turned the 30 minute Creemore to Clarksburg drive into a 4 and a half hour ordeal.
This year, IT WAS MORE BETTER!
Canadian Winters are the Worst for 'Car Friends'. Let's look at the pros and cons of this season in Canada:
Pros
You get to join us on 'Beat the Winter Blahs Events'
Cons:
You're in debt from Christmas
it's colder than a witch's teat
It's saltier than a scorned Newfoundlander
You realize having a fleet of collector cars and hoopties is *not* a good winter strategy
The Canadian winter classic 'Mitten bite maneuver'
The problem as we see it is that for essentially 6 months of the year the automotive hobby is at a standstill in the Great White North.
It's not just vehicles that are off the road, it's also friendships put on hold, driving trips are few and far between. We don't count the Christmas in-law present ferry; that's not a REAL road trip. Somehow we find ourselves immersed in Teams calls and staring longing out the window at a white landscape that used to be green and filled with fun cars. So once again, we set out in the depths of the cold and snow to redesign winter.
Since February is such a heap of shit why not just simply attack it with a bunch of cars running a ridiculous route down some amazing(ly bad) twisty roads, throw some Go-Kart racing in there, visits to Kenny U-Pull, a trip to Margaritaville followed by a late night winter tailgate party at at the sort of Motel you'd expect in Niagara Falls.
LET'S DO THIS!
First step, Assemble at Kenny U-Pull! The various jalopies, Junkyard cars, daily drivers and one squeaky clean Dodge Ram met up to get the day kicked off. Now putting decals on a car in the middle of winter involves heat guns, and a generally more involved process than saner weather.
Just FYI, this was the absolute worst decal install ever, in the history of time. Thanks Corey.
Leg 1: The drive
The route was a roundabout way to get from Kenny U-Pull in Barrie to Kenny U-Pull in St. Catharines. Corey has proven to be quite the course setter, and in combination with the Tourboss app we built a really great trip with *just* enough time to make it to K1 Speed at the tail end of the trip. Sounds great, right?
WRONG!
Yeah, that's a snowmobile trail. Thanks Corey!
Turns out winter turns a few rural roads into snowmobile trails... unbeknownst to our master course setter. Now this wouldn't be so bad if this particular driver wasn't French Canadian and had no regard for life, limb or what the weird red octagon meant.... Well we brought tracks & shovels for a reason.
Hero of the day:
Paul Simmons from Kenny U-Pull dragged this Saturn SC out of a lot near Montreal; drove it to the event, and then all the way back to Montreal and back into the scrapyard.
What an absolute legend, and this car was such a treat to have around. He even managed to find a missing trim piece and the end of the trip!
The first leg ended just in time at the Kenny U-Pull yard in St. Catharines, and all that remained now was a short trip to K1 Speed to settle some grudges on the racetrack!
Leg 2: The Grudge Match & the Motel
We had an absolute blast at K1! Now that being said, Corey came in 3rd and this was a severe disappointment to basically everybody. Now this isn't only because we want him to fail out of schadenfreude, there is also an element of which is his ego which simply does not need to be fed anymore.
We finished off the night with a picturesque snowfall and couldn't be happier with the Motel we picked for the night. Cadillac themed rooms and they let us all have a row of them so we could happily tailgate in sub zero weather and have some great bants until we were so cold we had to finally pack it in. What an a wonderful day spent with some of the best people around!
Leg3: The Falls & the Ride Home
The next day was spent doing a few photoshoots around the falls and leisurely driving back home in all of our various directions.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended and took a chance on us and our ridiculous adventures!
Since you read all the way here, why don't you check out this collection and help support us!
This relatively sunny day hanging out with old and new car bros was an absolute blast. Perfect thing to lift my spirits in the middle of winter. Thanks for putting this event together, boys. Won’t be my last – that’s for damn sure!
